George Harvey  Bone is a  composer  in early 2 0th century London,  who is und er stress be cause he is writing a pi ano concert o. Due to t his stress , he g ets black outs when ever he hears d issonances. Wh en he finds hi mself after the black out in a different quarter o f the town, he returns home, to r ead in the pa per that  somebody i n that qua rter was m urdered. Asking hel p from a  doctor at Sco tland Ya rd he is assured that he has nothi ng to do with i t, but he is advised to  cut back in h is work and get some  relaxat ion like other, ordina ry people. At a c heap musica l he meets  Netta, a singer, who inspires him for a ne w motive for  his concer to. But Netta  discovers that  this motive  could als o be use d as a song f or her. The so ng gets sold , and she hangs around G eorge to ge t more song s out of him.
